It was a wonder her laptop didn't overheat and explode from all the tabs she had open, from rental agreement sites full of fine print legal jargon to real estate sites for North Carolina. Charlotte and Victory Wrestling felt like a new beginning and she was completely in raze and burn mode, wanting to cut everything from the past out of her life. New York felt tainted now, just like Louisiana had. She didn't hate the little apartment with its cute little roof terrace and garden. She didn't hate the neighborhood. She just hated the fact that moving here had been for nothing.
Stifling a yawn, she sighed and then froze guiltily at a sound from the hallway that might have been her cat. Instead she saw a larger shadow on the wall and immediately grinned.
"Okay, so don't get mad but I was kinda looking for loopholes to get us out of this lease so we can just settle in Charlotte. I mean, if that's okay. If you don't wanna, I can just - we can just - like for match days, just go there and stay in a hotel or something. But we should be able to either do the Airbnb thing, really and like make the money back for the doubled up rent. You know? It might be an idea." Like usual, her mouth was half a mile ahead of her brain and she fell silent when he stopped in the living room doorway. They'd been together for a few months already and she was still in awe at how unbelievably perfect he was in every way.
Vinny smiled as he listened to what she had to say. "Together we'll find a way out of the lease, after all we're a team, a very good one at that." He walked over to where she was and leaned over her, planting a kiss on her forehead. "I'd much rather do whatever is easier for you. You know I'll always support you, beautiful." He ran a hand through his long hair as she flashed an adorable smile at him. "I have something to show you anyway." He took her hand in his, "close your eyes and let me take you to see."
"Ohh… a surprise?" Kasey's eyes gleamed with joy as she shoved the laptop off her lap, letting him pull her to her feet. She did her best to keep her eyes squeezed shut even though the prospect of a surprise had her completely wired.
He kissed her hand before leading her into the bedroom. "You can open your eyes now, babe." Vinny had put a small box on the bed surrounded by rose petals. He clapped his hands as the lights went out, leaving the only source of light the lit candles on the dresser. George, her cat, was napping on the bed with a bow tie on his collar too. "Open the box, beautiful."
There were a thousand questions in her eyes as she turned to him. "Vinny… what?" That little box could be so many things but she kept remembering what he'd said on Twitter about making things a little more permanent between them. No way. He can't possibly be doing that already. Her hands were shaking as she reached for the tiny box. As she had her back to him he got down on one knee with a ring in his hand. She popped the top on the velvet ring box to find it empty other than a folded slip of paper that fell out. She opened that to find the words ‘turn around beautiful' written there. When she turned around she was met with him on his knee.
"Make me the happiest man in the world, babe. Will you marry me?"
"Ohhh my God." She gasped, tears in her eyes as she stared at him. "You…" she nodded.
Vinny too had tears of joy in his eyes. One ran down his cheek as he smiled. "You're my everything. You and I are perfect together, nothing will ever change that." He slid the ring onto her finger and got up to hug her. "I love you."
"Vinny, I don't even…" she was still trying to say the perfect thing, to not ruin this moment that was like a dream come true. She forgot completely about Hunter and Akragth and all the other false starts because what she saw in his eyes was so pure, so raw that she knew he meant it. The ring was so beautiful she couldn't even process it and it fit perfectly on her finger like it had always belonged there. "You're the best thing. Ever. And not just because you pulled me out of that funk I was in because… because… of all the stuff with Landon and then Ak and the PAW stuff and…" she knew she was babbling but the tears were running down her face as she hugged him tight. "You're my rock. You make everything… you make it better just with that smile and I don't think I can ever really put into words how awesome that is." Tilting her head back, she looked up at him, at his handsome face and the tears in his eyes as she blinked hers away. "I love you so much."
"I couldn't imagine my life without you and George. He was so good letting me have him be part of this." Vinny wiped her tears away with his thumb as he cupped her beautiful face with his hand. "I'll never hurt you, I promise. Can't promise I won't eat the last of your ice cream, like earlier though." His smile was so big, everything was perfect with her, just how he'd imagined it would be. "Everything life chucks at us, we will handle it because together we're unbeatable and unbreakable." He held her close in his arms and he knew she could hear his heart beating fast. He was happy, excited and just feeling amazing right now. "George even gave me his permission to ask you when I spoke to him about it."
"Wow!" She couldn't hold back that giggle, knowing he was probably serious about asking. "That says a lot right there. I mean… George is pretty particular about the people he wants around." She held her hand out, looking at the ring sparkling in the candlelight. "It's so pretty! I feel like a Princess!"
"Feel like a Princess? I'd say you're more of a Queen to me. I'm your King, George our Prince. Together our kingdom is never going to fall." Vinny leaned down and stroked George who meow at the interruption to his nap before deciding to leave. "Oh charming, buddy." He can't help but laugh. "Guess he thinks we need time alone. This is also for you." Vinny handed her a necklace box. Kasey opened it to reveal a heart locket. She opened it to find a picture of him on one side and a picture of George on the other side. "You can keep us both inside your heart always."
"Oh…" she was so choked up with emotion she couldn't even get words out, touching the delicate gold chain. "That's so…" and the tears were back, flooding her eyes, wrecking the last of the eye makeup she'd been wearing all day. "You always know the exact right thing to say."
Once again Vinny wiped her tears away before putting the necklace on for her too. "That's all the gifts for now but tomorrow I'm taking you out for dinner." He sat down on the bed. "Right now though, I think it's time we snuggle up. I got the snacks ready, just time for you to pick a movie."
"Oooh!" She grinned, feeling like the luckiest girl in the world as she crawled onto the bed next to him before climbing into his lap. He was so huge by comparison that she fit there perfectly and for a moment it was so great to just listen to his heart beating and know that he loved her without reserve. No strings attached. No desire to change her into someone else. For the time being, she was content to live in the moment and ignore the little voice in the back of her head insisting not to get to comfortable with this one because he'd eventually vanish on her too. "Maybe something sappy but funny… like The Princess Bride."
"Whatever you want, babe." He started playing with her hair. "I just want you to know, I'm not like the rest. You're stuck with me. You have my promise!"
"Gonna hold you to that."
