(OFF CAMERA: PART ONE)
We come in with the Pride champion, sitting in the home he shares with his gorgeous girlfriend, Nessa, watching the television, though it’s not casual viewing. His eyebrows are narrowed into the television, clearly not impressed with what he’s seeing. He picks up the remote, rewinds the video a few minutes, and watches the same scene unfold again. What he’s watching is a repeat of Extreme Prejudice, available on the SVW Network for a simple $8.88 a month. After watching the part for a fourth time, he pauses the video and sighs. “Nessa?” He calls out, knowing the blonde is in a different room, waiting for her arrival.
“What’s up?” Her voice is faint, coming from down the hallway where the bedrooms are before she appears, gathering her damp hair up into a ponytail before securing it with an elastic. The question becomes rhetorical when she sees what he has paused on the screen. “Oh.”
“Come here a minute?” He asks, trying to sound sweet, patting down beside him on the couch, but not looking up at her as she entered. His eyes are still fixated on the screen, on the part where Harmony was leaving their locker room.
Nodding, she swallowed hard, feeling an odd twist of emotion at the sight of her former friend. “Do you want something to drink at all before I do? I was just going to grab myself a glass of wine. It’s no trouble to get two if you want to join me.” She really shouldn’t be mixing painkillers with alcohol, but with the way she was feeling right now, any bit of relaxation was a godsend.
“That sounds lovely.” He said, though emotion wasn’t coming through his words as he took the opportunity to rewind the video one more time and start watching it, sending off a real ‘a work and no play’ vibe right now. Normally he wouldn’t miss an opportunity to watch the curvy blonde walk into the kitchen, but his focus was solely on the television right now.
She was very aware of that distraction as she sighed softly, turning away. Over the noise of the video, the sound of cupboards being opened and closed could be heard before the petite blonde reappeared with two glasses of white wine in hand. Making her way over to the couch, she set one down on the table in front of Matt before settling back with hers. “Okay, I’m here. What is it that you need me to see?”
For the first time in minutes, Matt took his eyes off the screen as Nessa approached, watching her set the wine down in front of him and sit down beside him, the first thing he does when she sits down is lean over and kiss her cheek, seemingly out of nowhere. She almost spills her wine at the surprise, her eyes widening as she turns her head to look at him, a playful tone in her voice when she breaks the sudden silence.
“Careful, sweetie. I’m still a little tender.”
Matt brushes his hand through her hair before smiling back at her. “I know, and don’t worry, there will be revenge handed down about that, but even with cuts and bruises you’re still the most beautiful girl in the world, Nessa.” He finishes his statement by wrapping his arm around her and looking back to the television, rewinding it a bit and pausing on the face of the British Brunette who had visited them days earlier. “I’ve watched this at least half a dozen times now, and I have to say, while I hate to see you cry, I couldn’t have been more proud of you for how you handled that.”
“I’m not proud of myself,” she mutters in reply, “she blindsided me. The entire world saw that garbage… and I looked like a fool.” Matt shook his head, hearing her doubt herself.
“No, you looked loyal, she looked like a damn fool for trying to come between us, between what we have. Who is she to tell you what’s best for you? No one, that’s who. You did the right thing, Nessa, and don’t let anyone tell you different.”
“I wasn’t…” she trails off, shaking her head before taking a gulp of wine. “No, see. I wasn’t thinking about what they’d say. I just… I’ve lost a lot of face since I held the championship, you know? I’m… God… this is awful. I feel sick at the thought… because all I have in my future are those Ragnal morons.” She shudders at the remembrance of the Midas Touch match. “The last thing I want to do is become the butt of some joke. Now thanks to Harmony, that’s exactly what I am.”
“The Ragnals are a bleak future,” he agrees, but pulls her in closer to him. “But they’re a necessary evil if they’re going to try and stick their noses in our business. As for Harmony? I think she was already made to be the butt of someone else’s joke, so she shouldn’t be paid too much attention.” He pauses, looking her in the eyes now. “Though there was one thing about Harmony I did want to ask you about.” He finished, letting it hang out there for a second to see if she would know what he was getting at.
“The pepper.” She looks down at her lap, biting her lip. “I didn’t really have a chance to warn you. It all happened so fast and… I’m sorry. I thought maybe she was trying to use it to fake tears until I saw her snort it.”
“You could have said something at that point, you know. You had exactly fourteen and a half second from snort to...well you know, and I was staring into your baby blues for at least ten of those seconds, hon.”
“Fourteen? Oh. I…” she bows her head, staring down at the wineglass in her hand. “I guess I screwed up then. I just… when you’re looking at me like that, I have a hard time thinking about anything else, Matthew. You know that. I know it’s not an excuse.”
“You’re right, it’s not.” He says sternly, then puts his finger under her chin, raising her head. “Just try and be more aware in the future, okay? We’re a team, remember? You, of all people, know I detest people sneezing on me, you gotta protect me as I protect you.”
She twitches her nose, watching him flinch back before she laughs and leans in to kiss him gently on the lips. Pulling back, she rests her free hand against his chest, “absolutely. I’ll be vigilant.”
“You’re lucky I adore you.” he says sharply, having not really returned her kiss. “That wasn’t very funny.” he continues, reaching ahead to grab the glass of wine she had brought him. Taking a sip, he swirls the glass in his hand. “That’s a loaded weapon you have there.” He adds on, showing a flash of a smile.
“Not so much today, actually… the pollen count is pretty low.” She’s completely deadpan, no-selling his mock-outrage.
“Even more cause for celebration, then.” He says, kissing her cheek softly, trying not to aggravate her cuts she sustained. “Did you want to finish getting ready so we can go to dinner?” He asks, finally turning off the television, giving Harmony one final glare on the set beforehand.
“I’m not really sure I want to go out in public like this,” she says softly, looking embarrassed. “Maybe we should just call for Chinese and eat in. The last thing I want is some restaurant full of jerks gawking at me like I’m some poster girl for battered women.”
“Aww” he says, smiling softly to her. “If there would be a poster girl for that, you would be the perfect candidate, seeing how beautiful you are. If ordering in is what you want to do, then we will, this is your night. Just a bit of a shame as I don’t get to see you all dolled up.” He finishes with a playful grin, trying to get her spirits up.
She smiles, nodding. “You’re right. Forget what they think. I’m going to finish putting my face on and we’ll go. Should I wear the black dress or the blue one?”
Matt put his finger under his chin, as if this was a hard decision. “Well, the blue one really brings out your eyes, but the black one makes your butt pop more...so easy decision.” He adds with a smirk.
“Black it is then,” she replies, tossing back the rest of her wine before setting the glass on the table. Getting up, she turns and ruffles his hair with her hand before making her way back towards the bathroom.
“Cute” he said as his hair was being ruffled, watching Nessa make her way out of the room in the fashion he usually did. “Oh, babe?” He called out before she completely left the room. “If you could skip the whole ‘powder my nose’ part, I’d appreciate it.”
She pokes her head out of the bathroom, blowing a loud raspberry. “Mmmhmm, sweetie,” she calls out, her tone oozing with snark, “I’ll make sure I skip the powder and pepper and anything else that might add a little precipitation to the forecast.” And with that, she slips back inside to get herself ready for her date, taking extra care to cover up the worst of the war wounds from the Midas Touch match.
