The sun was sinking lower in the sky as they walked slowly down the hiking trail. She could hear the faint sound of hooves on the dusty ground – riding lessons were going on at the equestrian center and the night was so still that sound was carrying farther than usual. Like muted heartbeats, she found that soothing as she rested her head against his shoulder, leaning into Hunter as his arm tightened around her.
As they walked a little higher on the trail, she felt a hint of a breeze kick up, tossing her head to clear her hair from her face then lifting her free hand to tuck it behind her ears. Hunter hadn't said much all day and she was starting to wonder what that silence meant. A part of her was always on edge these days, hyper-alert and ready to strike – it wasn't just paranoia. It was the knowledge that everything eventually went wrong in her life. It had grown so exhausting that Kitty Petrova was seriously considering retirement again. The silence was starting to gnaw at her as she tilted her head to look up at him.
"Thanks," she murmured, grateful that he'd taken her on a long drive to see the sights outside of the city before ending up here at Lone Mountain Park. If she'd been left to her own devices, she'd have holed up in the gym for too many hours even though she was achy and stiff from wrestling on Sunday. "You're right. I needed this."
Hunter nodded in agreement as he kissed her temple. His other hand was in the pocket of the hooded black jacket he wore. There was a small black box that he felt for, making sure it was still there. "Figured it was a good way to spend our last night in town." They had finally arrived at a spot that would be perfect, at least as far as he could see. "Why don't we stop here for a bit? The view's pretty good." They were high enough up that they could see the city below all lit up.
She turned, tearing her attention away from him for a moment. A gasp caught in her throat as she saw the sun sinking over the strip off in the distance, lighting the sky orange and deep blue. "Oh…" she struggled for words, looking up at him in surprise, "it's so beautiful."
"Glad you like it." He chuckled as he took the backpack he'd been carrying, off. Unzipping it, he pulled out a blanket he'd borrowed from his sister and spread it out. There were a few snacks in the backpack and bottles of water. "Sit with me?" He took a seat on the blanket and checked his pocket to make sure the box was still there.
Laughing softly, she did as he asked and sat as close to him as possible. Rather than look at the view, she turned her head and looked at him. It wasn't just that he was unbelievably handsome, even though he was. She could spend hours looking into his eyes and never grow bored. They were bottomless, they seemed to change with his moods and right now in the light of the setting sun they were such a startling blue that they took her breath away. "I know you were talking to Bruce about me," she said softly, shrugging as if it didn't matter as she turned back to the view, missing his panicked look. "I know how much you worry. I wish you wouldn't." Absently, she rubbed the faded scar on her wrist that was all but hidden under the tattoo of an acorn.
"Can't help it," Hunter replied, his voice soft.
"I know. And I appreciate it, I really do. I promise you, I'm not drowning. I had that little moment in OCW when I thought I was going under-" she cut herself off with a sharp laugh, shaking her head. "I know you love seeing your sisters – it's been so long since Charity and I just hung out. But that doesn't mean I want to move here." She continued, oblivious still to the look on his face, "not yet. Not until I know for sure that I want to keep working for Action."
Hunter exhaled, relieved that she hadn't found out what the main parts of the conversation with her cousin had been. "That's fine, I just wanted to keep an eye out in case there was a place, one for the horses." He had hope that at some point they would move to Vegas so he could be near his family, but it could wait a few years. "You and me… how do you feel about how things're going?"
With a gentle smile, Kitty turned back and wrapped her arms around his arm, resting her head on his shoulder. "Is that a trick question?" She sighed contentedly, closing her eyes as she snuggled against him. "Is that why you've been so quiet?" She hesitated for a second, not really giving him time enough to answer, "guess I was right. I told Charity I felt like I was dragging you down."
He thought about she said and it confused him. "Have I said or done something that makes it seem like I feel that way?"
"No. You haven't." She looked up at him, "I just thought – you dropped everything, Hun. I just don't want you to feel like you're obligated to…" she trailed off with a sigh, shaking her head. "Sorry. I'm ruining the moment."
"You're not ruining anything, " he said with a chuckle. "And remember, I made the choice to follow you. I'm here because I want to be. I love you, Kit, but sometimes I don't know how else to prove to you that I'm not going anywhere." He kissed the top of her head. "Do ya want me to write in blood?"
She managed a chuckle, shaking her head. "That's hardly sanitary," the words were muffled against his shoulder as she turned away from the view, happier to just be close to him than watch another day fade away. "I'd say hire a skywriter, but that wouldn't last. We'll have to stop by one of those tattoo places on the way back. That'd be permanent enough."
Hunter had planned out a speech, but he wasn't going to use it. Instead, he smirked to himself and reached into his pocket, wrapping his hand around the box. "How about we try somethin' else first?" He turned his head so he could look down at her. "I didn't just talk to Bruce about moving here. I wanted to ask him for his blessing. He's the only family you got and it didn't feel right otherwise." He revealed the box to her. "I'm hopin' this'll quiet that little voice in your head that's making you doubt us." With a shaking hand, he opened the little black box to reveal a gorgeous emerald stone secure in a rose gold setting. There were tiny diamonds around the emerald and on the band. "Marry me." It was a statement, more than a question.
Her eyes went wide as she lifted her hand up, pressing it over her mouth in shock. Blinking through tears, she looked from the ring back up to his face. "Oh God," she whispered as her hand fell away and tears spilled down her cheeks. "Yes. I will."
His face widened into a huge grin as there were a few tears that wanted to fall down his cheek. "I love you and I always will." He grabbed her left hand gently and placed the ring on her finger – it was a perfect fit, just like they were. He then brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. "Always."
