March 27, 2014 (off camera)
Two days before Chaos Theory in Montreal…
The local comic shop had been advertising for weeks how they were going to have one of FFW's top stars at the shop that day signing autographs in advance of the upcoming Pay-Per-View event. And the line formed out of the door and along the sidewalk of fans who came to see Kasey Summers, known to FFW fans as Summer. The redhead (with visible roots) sat at the table, signing 8x10s as well as items the fans brought with them. She hugged a few as well. She was a hit! The only problem? It wasn't Kasey Summers.
The owner of the shop headed towards the door as he checked his watch, stepping through the people and making the announcement.
Man: Ladies and gentlemen, we are going to take a half hour break so Kasey can take a rest. Keep the number you were given; she'll be back signing autographs in just thirty minutes. Until then, feel free to browse. Remember, don't lose your number!
He headed back inside the shop, leaning down behind his guest of honor and whispering.
Man: I got a reporter in the break room who wants to interview you for the newspaper, tomorrow's edition about Chaos Theory.
That brought a smile to her face as she signed the last picture and took a picture with that fan as well before she headed towards the back, bounding with a smile on her face as the line dispersed. The owner of the comics shop followed along behind her with a smile on his face, opening the break room door as they reached the back. Making sure no customers could see or hear, he let her into the room where a lone man sat at a table with an overcoat on. A smile formed on his face as he looked up from his phone to her.
Man: Here she is...sir.
He let himself out, closing the door behind him as the fake Kasey beamed at the man sitting at the table.
Man 2: My name is Carson Black...and I've been looking forward to meeting you. I'm a big fan.
When the shop owner closed the door, there happened to be another woman standing behind it. And yes, that would be the real Kasey.
At first, the real Kasey said nothing but she did have the presence of mind to lock the door before taking a step away from it. Unlike her doppelganger, she was graceful enough to be undetected as she stayed behind the woman, her eyes fastened on Carson as though waiting for his cue.
Carson: Before we begin though...Kasey…
He said that with a forced smile on his face, pushing a chair out for her to take a seat across from him.
Carson: I did bring along someone who would love to meet you. Someone, like me, who has been following your exploits for some time.
"Kasey": Of course, Mr. Black! I love meeting fans.
The girl even managed to make herself sound like Kasey, which startled Carson as he had never heard her speak before. Yet she sounded very close, but just not exactly. She reached into her top, removing a Sharpie from her bra and twisted the cap off when she turned around and looked into the eyes of the real Kasey. Her eyes widened to the size of saucers as she tried to step back, but stumbled against the table and dropped her Sharpie to the floor.
Carson: Meet Kasey Summers.. Or I should say...the real Kasey Summers.
Kasey: Ohmygod, hi!
The real Kasey poured on the enthusiasm even though the look in her eyes could have melted diamonds.
Kasey: Super huge fan, really. Maybe you can give me your autograph, right after they throw you in jail for identity theft!
Carson moved around the table, showing her his phone's screen.
Carson: I'm calling the police as we speak.
"Kasey": Uhm...I'm really sorry. Please don't call the police. My grandma will kill me.
Carson: She may have to stand in line for that privilege, Miss….?
"Kasey": Tori…
Carson: A real pleasure, Tori.
The real Kasey frowned, the sour look on her face very out of character when she usually spent her time smiling.
Kasey: I don't get it.
At the blank look she got from Tori, she shook her head, rolling her eyes.
Kasey: What do you get out of this? Is this some creepy wish fulfillment stuff? Like… are you going to try and murder me in my sleep and replace me? Because… really? People would notice. You're a terrible wrestler!
Tori noded her head, glancing over to Carson who walked a few steps away as he waited for someone to pick up on the other end of his call.
Tori: I know. And no...I wouldn't do something like that. I...I love you! You're like...one of my favorite wrestlers ever. I watch you all the time, FFW, that place in Colorado...even in that one match you had for SCW. I have them all on DVD, and tapes of the rest when I recorded them off the television. You know how hard it is getting copies of stuff from RMP? It's stupid hard, because...it's like the wrestling world is trying to erase all existence of it or something.
Kasey: Well of course they are! God, Bryan Deas was almost a main eventer there… so you know it's a giant joke! Did you see the bootleg of that match from that other place from Denmark where I beat that druggie in like 10 seconds flat?
She found herself laughing for a moment before she remembered who she was dealing with.
Kasey: I almost got in a lot of trouble because of you. If you're a fan, you have a really shitty way of showing it!
Tori looked down at her feet with a bit of a sullen look.
Tori: I know… It wasn't personal or anything. Look, here's the thing. I've watched wrestling since I was a little girl. It's awesome. The fans cheering, the lights, everyone watching you. I always thought I could be one too, but I'm not really...athletic so much. But see, I live with my grandmother. She's taken care of me since I was a kid. And as she got older, her health got worse really. And she couldn't afford some things. It got to a point where she was debating on whether to buy groceries or her medication. So...I decided I should help her.
She trailed off for a moment, looking down to her nails and then back to Kasey.
Tori: She needed money quick. And getting a job is stupid hard too when you're a nobody from Connecticut. And I got to thinking what would you do? And I figured you'd be all "I'll do what I do best." And that's clearly wrestling. People used to tell me I look a lot like you, I think it helped that I tried to. But either way, I decided to give it a shot. Little tiny shows here and there to pick up some extra cash. I didn't figure anyone would know. Seriously some places had like 200 people. I thought no one would notice. But then word got out that I was...uh..you were taking indy bookings. And I started getting more calls..and more bookings...and making more money for my grandmother's expenses.
She pulled up part of her skirt to show some bruising on her thigh.
Tori: I also picked up a few ass kickings...well a lot of them. But then it was like...I was already you. So...why stop? I didn't think you'd ever find out. And I'm sorry I did it. I promise...I won't do it again… Because I'll be in JAIL!
Kasey: Wait… so… you did this because your sick grandma needed money?
Her eyes lifted to Carson, as if she wanted to gauge his response to the words that she appeared to be swallowing… hook, line and sinker.
Kasey: You know, if you wanted to train right, you could have come to Phoenix and trained at my uncle's school. You could've even come to Fort Lauderdale and… well… I'm more angry that you went out there, used my name, and made me look hella bad when I'm trying my best to get back to where I was when I left FFW. That's not going to happen when I've got some crazy person out here lying and USING MY NAME!
She raised her voice at the end, looking like she was battling between crying and punching this girl in the face.
Tori: I'd love to try training, and I'll have the money saved up in no time. I got these shows coming up in Reading and Schenectady.
She was about to get excited for a moment before she realized where she was again, clearing her throat.
Tori: Which I'll totally be cancelling….right before the police take me into custody. Look, I'll even give you the money I made if you want it. Well what's left of it. I got like...three hundred dollars left. I was going to go buy a money order and mail it to my grandmother, but ya know...you can have it. Who needs diabetes medication!
Kasey: I don't want your stupid money. I just…
She trailed off, making a sound of exasperation.
Kasey: GOD! I can't even be mad at you when you're being so freakin' nice! Why can't you be an evil, lizard queen bitch like Nessa?!
Tori: Well I'm not much of a lizard, but if it makes you feel better, my butt is chafed to hell from sliding all over the mat. Does that count?
Kasey: Baby powder does wonders but I use that Gold Bond stuff with the aloe in it. Really helps a lot and so do the slippery fishnets— not sure why.
She pushed her glasses back up her nose, staring at the impostor.
Kasey: Kind of a downer that you didn't have time to touch up your roots before this. Guess you couldn't afford a $6 box of Nice 'n Easy, huh?
Tori: Oh, I use the….uh, cheap stuff because of ya know…Grandma. Anyway, I'm sorry about this.
Tori's eyes glanced back to Carson for a moment, stepping past Kasey and tapping him on the shoulder. Carson turned around as Tori batted her eyes.
Tori: I have a request, Mr. Black.
Carson: And that is?
She dropped to her knees and hugged his leg.
Tori: PLEASE DON'T SEND ME TO JAIL!!
Carson tried to walk away, but she had a grip on his leg that was making that difficult. He glanced back to Kasey. Then back to Tori.
Carson: Please let go of my leg...Tori. If Miss Summers says so, then I will not. But otherwise…that's where you belong.
The smile on Kasey's face faded as she looked at the girl on the floor. Something in the back of her mind was bothering her and then it clicked almost audibly as she looked up, her voice growing a bit less friendly.
Kasey: We saw your match in Poughkeepsie….
Carson looked down to the woman at his leg, raising his eyebrow at her. Tori's face sunk at this point, looking back to Kasey as her arms hugged his leg.
Tori: Oh yeah…. Did you see the…? Probably did.
She let go of his leg and flopped down to a seat on the floor with a pouty look on her face.
Carson smiled down to her as the line picked up on the phone with him.
Tori: Okay...okay….
Carson's eyes looked back to her again.
Tori: I'll come clean….
Carson: I look forward to hearing this story immensely.
Tori: But I can't if I'm going to JAIL!
Carson's eyes rolled as he disconnected the call, sliding the phone into his pocket.
Carson: If you lie to us again, Tori… I can guarantee that's where you will go.
Tori: You know that girl you mentioned? Nessa Wall? Well it's funny you mention her….
